WHERE TRADITION MEETS A COSMOPOLITAN ENVIRONMENT
OUR LOCATION: A beautiful village which is located at the south coast of Cyprus, 16 kilometres away from the town of Larnaca and 55 kilometres away from the capital of Cyprus Nicosia. It is built on the coast plain of Larnaca and the village’s scenery presents a gradient towards the sea. Pervolia is adorned by a breathtaking 4 kilometres-long beach.
THE NAMING AND HISTORY OF THE VILLAGE: In the very ancient years, Pervolia used to be the rest place for the Kings and the rich people of the area. Our village, Pervolia, was named after its abundant gardens, meaning the rich in production fields and the thousands of productive trees.
Pervolia used to belong to the royal family of the Lousinianians during the Frankish Period, which lasted from 1191 until 1489. The last owner of this period was Charles Louzinianos, who was persecuted by King Iacovos the Fatherless because he supported Queen Charlotte. King Iacovos removed the ownership of Pervolia from Charles by issuing a decree.
During the Venetian Period, Pervolia was sold to the Greek family of Podokatares and the last owner was Ektoras Podokatoras (period 1489 – 1571).
POPULATION: In 1881, the residents of the village were 375. In 1960, the residents of Pervolia were 734, in 1993 they were 1144 and in the recording of 2001 they had reached 1920. In the summer, the village changes appearance since it is flooded by thousands of local and foreign visitors whereas more than five thousand people move around the village on a daily basis.
RESIDENTS’ PROFESSIONS: Pervolia, the coast village with more than 1900 residents is well known for its hospitality and the simplicity of its residents. In the past, the residents of the village dealt with farming because we had plenty of water to use for cultivations. However, as time passed by, irrigation waters became salty and therefore the residents turned to other professions as well. Production of perishable food was minimized. The residents turned to alternative professions such as working in factories, constructions, ports and airports, with the majority of them going into the tourism business. During the latest years, the youth of our village prefer to continue their studies abroad or in Cyprus and as a result we now have several teachers, nursery teachers, business administrators, doctors and accountants.
SCHOOLS – ASSOCIATIONS: In the village, we have a primary School which was built in 1926 and which has 190 students. Many scientists of today as well as people of the daily indispensible labour have graduated from this school. Although it is renovated and provides several comforts, our community asks for the construction of a new one which will respond to the needs of present study, with modern classrooms, a gym, parking places and a students’ assembly hall. The community pays particular attention to the teaching staff being appointed in our school since they constitute the beginning of learning and the creation of people with knowledge and virtues which will also be carried by the future residents of Pervolia.
In our village, we also have a Public and Community Nursery School which is constantly modernised both with the help of the state and the community. An important part is also played by the Parents’ Associations of both the Primary and the Nursery School.
In the community there are two associations which accommodate several groups of the residents such as women’s groups, youth groups, workers’ groups and athletic clubs. In particular, there is the association of the Popular Organizations of Pervolia and the association of THOI PERVOLION. The associations develop their own cultural, social and athletic activity and play their own role within the community since through their events they give the residents the opportunity to participate in them.
